The creation, articulation and implementation of the company's future vision are some of, if not the most important responsibilities of top management. The Strategic Planning process affords several opportunities for evaluating the performance of senior personnel in carrying out those responsibilities. The CEO can first look at the degree of support and participation in the process. As CEO, you should consider: Are the managers present and prepared for each scheduled meeting? Are they fully engaged in the process, yet respectful of others' positions? Do they take time to explain the process to others outside of the planning team and incorporate the company's Strategies into departmental goal setting? Once formal implementation of the Strategic Plan has begun, there is the added dimension of progress on Action Plans. Accountability with regard to timely completion of action items and resultant progress on the completion of Objectives should be a significant part of a manager's evaluation.
